Students at town's high school celebrate GCSE results

Jack Watts, who lives in the Stobhill area, received three 9s, five 8s and one 7, as well as an A* in further maths and an A in applied business.

He was among those doing Latin and thanked teacher Mrs Bowker for her efforts as he gained a grade 8.

The 16-year-old added: “I’m delighted with my results and I’m actually most pleased with my 8 in English language as I thought I would be getting a 6 for that subject.

“I will be doing chemistry, economics, maths and further maths for my A-levels.”

The results for Stannington resident Katie Richardson included five 9s, three 8s and an A in further maths.

She said: “I’m glad I managed to achieve these results. I was very surprised to get a grade 9 in physics.”

Katie’s A-level subjects will be biology, chemistry and maths.

As well as joining KEVI at the start of Year 11, a lot of the curriculum was new to Andrew Schreiner as he moved from the USA to a new country when his mum was transferred to the UK last August – she works in Newcastle and the family live in Morpeth.

Despite this, the 16-year-old achieved seven higher GCSE passes. In addition, he joined a flying school based at Newcastle International Airport and he should complete his private pilot’s licence next month.

Andrew said: “I enjoy living in Morpeth and I would say the schooling at KEVI is a lot better than where I was in the USA.

“I’m coming back to KEVI for A-levels. I will study English, maths and physics.”

Loansdean resident Zoe Jones, who thanked her family for their support, gained three 9s, six 8s and one 7 grade.

She said: “I’m very pleased and as I struggled with history and maths at times, I’m delighted to have done very well in both subjects.

“I will be doing English literature, geography and history for my A-levels and I’m looking forward to studying these subjects in more depth.”

Tom Berry, who lives in the Middle Greens area, progressed the most from the starting point in the year group.

He said: “I received a 9 in English literature and two 7s, and I was very surprised to get a 5 in geography as that was the subject I found the hardest.”

“The teachers at KEVI have been fantastic – they have always given me support when I needed it,” he added.
