After deciding to turn her hobby into a career last year, Suzanne Treacy enrolled onto a two-year HND course at Northumberland College.

The Netherwitton resident entered Hand & Lock’s textiles competition – The Prize 2016 – and she made the short-list of six in the textile art student category.

After making a new piece for the final, she finished an excellent second in this section. The finalists’ scores were 50 per cent from the judges and 50 per cent from those in attendance.

Suzanne’s inspiration was 15th century Renaissance painter Stefano di Giovanni, known as il Sassetta.

Her prize includes a placement at Hand & Lock’s premises in February, a weekend course there that normally costs £180 and a unique hand-made embroidered piece to keep.

The 51-year-old said: “My photograph entry was something I had done for college and I made a similar, but new, piece for the final to make it fit all the elements of the competition brief and highlight the innovative part.

“The faces of saints were photocopied onto acetate and crystal resin was then dripped onto them and peeled off once dried.

“I was absolutely thrilled with the result. I didn’t even expect to be a finalist, so to get second place was fantastic.

“I was actually at a creative leathercraft session in Hexham when I met fashion and textiles tutor Linda Lightley, as she was stepping in for the day, and after being invited to the main campus in Ashington, I decided to give the HND course a try.

“If I achieve the HND, I will apply to do a degree in textiles.”

She added: “I’ve had to take a year out this year, so I will start the second year of my HND in September 2017, but it’s worked out for the best as it has enabled me to do the placement at Hand & Lock.”
