MORPETH AND DISTRICT U3A

Morpeth U3A enjoyed an exciting afternoon, with two celebrations on the cards.

First of all came the Annual General Meeting, attended by 67 of its 267 members, after which the branch celebrated its 20th anniversary.

The Guest of Honour was Brian Stephenson, Morpeth U3A’s founding Chairman. After entertaining members with a brief and amusing history of the Morpeth branch, Brian then cut the special cake made by the Treasurer Pam Turner. Everyone then enjoyed a slice of cake with a cup of tea and the conversation flowed thick and fast.

As part of his talk, Brian produced a 20-year-old press cutting from the Morpeth Herald, which was a photograph of the first birthday meeting in 1995, which everyone present was keen to see and compare with the branch today. At the AGM, Bob Richardson was returned as Chairman, as was Treasurer Pam Turner. The newly-elected Secretary is Sandy Harvey.

Also serving on the committee are Bridgit Coxon as Minute Secretary, Margaret Trotman as Media Secretary, and Merle Heppell.

l Morpeth U3A is pleased to announce that its quiz team has been successful in winning this year’s U3A Regional Quiz Shield.

On behalf of the team, Liz Elders accepted the Shield, which was dedicated to their sadly missed member and friend Romek Goldsztajn.
