EXCITEMENT is building as the Olympic flame will be arriving in Morpeth very soon.
The Northumberland Olympic Torch Relay is scheduled to reach the town at 10.34am, starting at the bottom of Whorral Bank.
The route will then follow Howard Terrace and Copper Chare to Newgate Street. It will be taken down the road to Bridge Street and on to Telford Bridge, proceeding along Castle Square and Castle Bank, and ending at the Mafeking Park roundabout at 10.48am.
Morpeth Pipe Band will be providing entertainment ahead of the convoy.
Chamber of Trade Chairman John Beynon said: “The big day has arrived and lots of people I’ve spoken to will be coming down to watch the event.
“It’s great that it will be coming through the town centre and all the press and television coverage can only be good for Morpeth.
“Businesses are very enthusiastic about the relay and I’m sure workers will also be out in force to cheer on the torchbearers. It’s nice that it’s going down Newgate Street as its sometimes left out of things.”
Bridge Street is now closed and will re-open around 11.30am. Diversions will be in place.
The rest of the route will be covered by rolling road closures as the Torch passes through.
Residents can comment directly about the relay on a special blog for the event, which can be accessed via our website. An Olympic Torch Live tab can be found as one of the drop down options under News in the grey panel.
Also, anyone who tweets with the hashtag #NlandTorch will appear on the stream.
After Morpeth, it will go to Hartford, Bedlington and Blyth before moving on to North Tyneside then Newcastle.
