PONTELAND Town Council is preparing to take over the running of Prestwick Cemetery.
Coun Robin Ramsay told members that following a meeting with Northumberland County Council about services, the intention is for the unitary authority to transfer the facility to it next year.
If it goes ahead, he said the town council will need to discuss how it will operate the cemetery and manage the works to be carried out at the site.
“It will also be useful to have talks with neighbouring parishes because some of their residents may have to pay a foreign rate,” Coun Ramsay added.
“The county council does have the option of classing the cemetery as a special expense for a year or two whilst we figure out how we will run the site.”
Coun David Butler said: “This is going to cost the town council a lot of money in the future so we need to get it as right as we can as soon as we can.”
Coun Ramsay also said that the county council is considering the transfer of the Merton Hall freehold to the town council.
