A key pair of traffic lights in Morpeth town centre has developed a fault.

The pelican crossing on Bridge Street is turning red when the button has not been pressed, causing traffic to stop unnecessarily in the process.

Morpeth resident Albert Morrison has reported the matter to Northumberland County Council on a few occasions since April 30.

He said: “When I reported it on May 20, I received a call back saying someone had been into Morpeth to examine the traffic lights, but it was still faulty on Monday evening.”

A spokeswoman for the council said: “We are aware of this issue and have already reset the lights in the hope that this would solve the problem.

“We have now referred it on to our street lighting contractors and hope to resolve it as soon as possible.”
