COUNTY councillors have added their backing to calls for dangerous sections of the A1 north of Morpeth to be dualled.
Last week the Herald reported that Berwick MP Sir Alan Beith had raised the issue in the House of Commons, asking for schemes to dual dangerous single carriageway sections on the road to be brought forward as a matter of urgency.
Under Secretary of State for Transport Norman Baker said discussions are already taking place.
The news has been welcomed by the council’s Executive Member for Infrastructure and Environment Isabel Hunter.
“I am very pleased that Mike Penning, the Under Secretary of State for Transport, is looking at schemes prepared by the Highways Agency which would dual dangerous single carriageway sections of the A1,” she said.
“I am working closely with Sir Alan Beith, who is challenging the Government to allocate funding to dual sections of the A1 at Mousen Bends near Belford and between Felton and Morpeth.”
