Man dies on railway line

A MAN has died after being struck by a train in Widdrington Station.

British Transport Police (BTP) were called to the station at 10.25pm on Thursday following reports that a man had been hit by the 6.16pm Aberdeen to Leeds train.

Northumbria Police and the North East Air Ambulance Service also attended, but the 72-year-old man, who has not been formally named, was pronounced dead at the scene.

He is thought to be from the Widdrington area.

The incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner.

The line was handed back to Network Rail at 12.43am on Friday.
