RAIL passengers were stuck for three hours when their train broke down shortly after leaving Morpeth station.

The 18.53 East Coast service from Newcastle to Aberdeen on Tuesday slowed to a halt because of a mechanical issue and engineers were called out to fix the problem.

The line remained open, meaning other services were able to overtake the train.

An East Coast spokesman said: “We can confirm that East Coast’s 18.53 service from Newcastle to Aberdeen suffered a mechanical problem between Morpeth and Alnmouth, causing a three-hour delay for which we apologise.”
