A WOMAN made an unexpected family discovery on a visit to Morpeth during Heritage Open Days.
Jane McLauchlin had a look round the churchyard outside the Church of St Mary the Virgin to try and find out more information about her great, great, great grandparents — Robert and Jane Thompson.
But instead she found the headstone of Margaret Naisby, sister of her great, great grandfather George Thompson.
This also had details of other family members.
The Croydon resident said: “Hearing about the Heritage weekend inspired me to travel up to Morpeth to see if I could find out some more information about my family history.
“I couldn’t find anything about Robert and Jane Thompson, but fortunately I noticed Margaret Naisby on one of the stones and it was a good find as it had details of her descendants on the same stone.
“It was fascinating to see that there were occupation details on the headstones going back to the 18th Century. The churchyard is a real living piece of history.”
