Signage will be installed in a Ponteland shopping precinct in an attempt to reduce the potential for an accident involving bikes and pedestrians.

A report from the town council’s highways working party to a full council meeting stated: “PC Rob Anderson reported that he was receiving an increasing number of complaints regarding irresponsible and unrestricted cycling in the Merton Way area.

“He asked whether signage could be erected so he can approach individuals to ask them to dismount.”

Working party chair Christine Greenwell said advice had been sought from the county council and members were told that signage could be installed provided they were ‘Cyclists dismount’ traffic signs and they would have to pay for them.

The town council agreed by a majority vote to put five such signs in place at a cost of £1,560.
