RESIDENTS in Northumberland have been advised to be wary of doorstep salesmen.
The advice has been issued by Northumberland Trading Standards and Northumbria Police following an increase in inquiries about surfacing salesmen.
It is not illegal for traders to canvas by going door-to-door, but quick decisions on the doorstep may lead to unnecessary jobs or more expensive work than expected.
Residents are advised to shop around for services to get the best deal, seek written quotations from reputable traders which detail the work to be carried out and seek recommendations. For goods or services over £35 customers have the right to change their mind within seven days.
Northumberland also operates a Registered Traders Scheme, which allows people to access a list of traders who have been checked by Trading Standards and signed a Code of Practice. For details call 0845 6006400 or visit www.traderegister.org.uk/nnt
