Morpeth Harrier Laura Weightman has qualified for this summer’s World Championships, but failed to defend her British 1500m title in Birmingham this afternoon.

The Lesbury athlete ran 4:14.83 to finish a distant second to Scot Laura Muir, who won the race and the British Championships crown in 4:10.37.

Last June, Weightman won the event from Muir ahead of an incredible summer which saw her win silver at the Commonwealth Games and bronze at the European Championships.

Her second-place finish today secures her a spot in the GB team for the World Championships in Beijing, China, which take place from August 22 to 30.

Speaking to the BBC after the race, Weightman said: “I’m pleased to have secured my qualification for Beijing. I would have liked to have been a little bit closer to Laura (Muir) there, to have challenged her a little bit more, but I just didn’t have it in the legs today.

“She’s in the form of her life, she’s running really well, but I’ve got six/seven weeks left until I have to race in Beijing. I’ve got a few more weeks’ training to get ready for a few more races so come Beijing I’ll be back up there challenging.”
