A vandal has struck at Northumberland Wildlife Trust’s Hauxley nature reserve – much to the delight of the wildlife charity.

The reserve’s volunteers found an example of woodpecker vandalism on one of the bird boxes while clearing them out.

For, although the metal front, which was supposed to stop unlawful entry, was still in one piece, a very determined and clever woodpecker had used its initiative and drilled a hole in the side to gain entry.

Meanwhile, Archie Johnston, head of security on the site, and pictured, is on the look-out for the vandal, who will be sent flying off the reserve with a loud bark.

The reserve is currently closed to the public while its new Wildlife Discovery Centre is under construction. Follow the build’s progress at www.facebook.com/HauxleyNatureReserve
