Joyce Wotherspoon’s account of Morpeth may be accurate, but perhaps is unduly gloomy.
The Greater Morpeth Development Trust (GMDT) worked with partners to produce a feasibility study on the need for an arts venue in Morpeth, which was overwhelmingly positive, and hopefully support will grow for the development of a new venue.
Also, GMDT’s Morpeth Community Cinema is a successful venture that has been running for over five years and cannot be characterised as just showing ‘old films’.
Most films shown were released 12 months ago or less, for example on September 2 Suffragette has a local connection to Morpeth, and on October 7 it’s Alan Bennett’s The Lady in the Van. Following audience feedback, occasionally we do show classics such as The Quiet Man, which can be seen on November 4.
Although old films are on TV, there’s nothing quite like seeing them on the big screen now that Morpeth has its own projection and sound equipment.
We hope to increase the number of screenings next year. Details of future shows and tickets are at www.morpethcinema.weebly.com
We look forward to welcoming new and familiar audience members alike.
