LIBRARY: Why not ‘fit for purpose’?

Mr Leo, Head of Strategic Estates at Northumberland County Council, states that ‘the Gas House Lane library building is no longer fit for purpose’, (Morpeth Herald, January 21).

This phrase has become much used by politicians, both national and local, and has no meaning unless Mr Leo states what he sees the purpose of the library as, both now and into the future, and exactly why it is no longer fit to do its job.

In all the items and publicity about the library recently, no one has made this clear.

I use the library and find it fit for my purposes, and I am interested to know what our decision makers think those purposes are and why they need a different building.
