Medicals 17 Morpeth 40 Durham and Northumberland Division One
Morpeth gained yet another bonus point league win in their quest for promotion against a spirited Medicals side, who proved both enterprising and committed.
The pitch was in excellent condition, considering the recent weather, and it didn’t take long for Morpeth to grab the initiative with a try after about 10 minutes when flanker Denton went over close to the posts, with Birch adding the extras.
Morpeth lost the services of Brown, with a head injury, and he was greatly involved in the move leading to the try. Tom Manley came on as replacement and made a most notable contribution.
Medicals, as they did throughout, showed resilience coming back and equalised with a converted try of their own.
Skipper Hill then responded with a trademark try of his own, rumbling over from a forwards drive.
Following this, Morpeth produced a good team effort with backs and forwards combining to send Manley over for a try, which Birch again converted to make the half-time score 19-7 to the visitors.
Medicals hit back with a penalty, but Denton scored his second try showing excellent support after good work from replacement Manley.
Denton then completed a well-deserved hat-trick, with Birch again adding the extras.
To their credit, Medicals came back with a converted try before Defty sealed a good win for Morpeth, with a final try converted by Birch.
