‘Ton’ up Johnston guides Morpeth to victory

Ton-up Paul Johnston was the hero as Morpeth 1sts maintained third place in the Northumberland & Tyneside Cricket League Division 1 with a big nine wicket home win over Leadgate 1sts.

Christopher Winn hit 116 as Leadgate opened with 201-8, but Johnston hit an unbeaten 108 and Jonny Craig was 66 not out as Morpeth replied with 202-1 in 34 overs.

In Division 2, Ponteland 1sts lost their lead at the top, overtaken by Tillside 1sts, after they suffered a five wicket away loss at Backworth 1sts.

In a low scoring game, Pont were all out for only 61, with Iftikhaar Fazal on 30, Chris Liddle and Terry Finchen both taking four wickets. Backworth chased it down at 63-5 in 18 overs.

Blagdon 1sts are third following a big 102-run home win over Whickham 1sts. Nigel Clough top scored with 51 as Blagdon put on 227-6 in their 45 overs, with Whickham all out for 125, Paul Johnston taking 5-26.

In Division 3, Stobswood 1sts’ away game against Allendale 1sts was cancelled.

In Division 5, Ponteland 2nds had a 54 run home win over Backworth 2nds. Dan Edwards was top bat with 72 as Pont put on 245 all out, Chris Race taking 4-46. Sam Caton was 54 not out as Backworth made 191 all out in reply with Yuvraj Chauhan taking 4-23.

Kirkley 1sts had a big 266-run away win over Civil Service 1sts. Kirkley batted first and made a massive 350-7 with David Marshall on 92 and John Marshall on 91. Civil Service were then all out for only 84 with JohnMarshall taking 4-9.

In Division 5 North, Morpeth 2nds remain second in the table after their big ten wicket away win over Bedlington 2nds. The home side were all out for only 80, Callum Lawn and Jack Concannon each taking three wickets. Morpeth chased it down at 81 without loss in ten overs.

Blagdon 2nds beat Ulgham 1sts by eight wickets. Ulgham were 169-8 in their 40 overs with Blagdon 170-2 in reply.

In Division 6 North, Ulgham 2nds lost by nine wickets away to Bomarsund 2nds. Ulgham were all out for 98 with Bomar 100-1 in reply.

In Division 6 South, Kirkley 2nds (73-2) won by eight wickets away to Civil Service 2nds (72 all out with Pradeep Nair taking 5-22).
