Morpeth RFC U14s 19 Alnwick RFC U14s 14
It was success at Mitford Road for the Morpeth U14s in a strongly-contested local derby.
The hosts immediately took the game to Alnwick, dominating in their own half for the first 20 minutes.
The first Morpeth try came from intense pressure from the forwards and backs. The ball was released and passed through the backs out wide into the hands of right-wing Dean Carling, who charged down the wing and scored in the corner after 22 minutes.
Fly-half Harry Bertram was on the mark from a difficult angle to convert. Two minutes later, the ball was in the hands of full-back Ruaridh Lang, who powered through the Alnwick defence to score.
Morpeth increased the pressure on the visiting forwards, pinning them down on their line, and this resulted in a superb try by forward Luke Bailey. Another successful conversion by Bertram made it 19-0 at half-time.
Alnwick came back strongly in the second half to put pressure on the home side and they scored two converted tries within 10 minutes to make it 19-14.
Morpeth’s strong squad was demonstrated by the successful substitutions, all of whom contributed to the result and kept Alnwick at bay.
Both sides had spells of possession, but no further points were scored and this meant Morpeth’s loyal supporters could celebrate a 19-14 victory for the home side. Man-of-the-match was awarded to Bertram.
