Morpeth 36 Consett 0 Durham and Northumberland, Division One

Morpeth began their league campaign with an excellent win against a hard-working Consett outfit in front of a large crowd at Mitford Road.

It was not an auspicious start to the game when the home side lost Forsythe after four minutes. Son of new president Peter, the second row has been the leading player over the past two seasons.

But Morpeth soon got into their stride and skipper Hill, who led from the front throughout, rumbled over from close range.

Menzies then touched down and Thornton dived through to score after swopping passes with Lynn. As none of the tries were converted, the hosts led 15-0 at half-time.

The second half got off to an excellent start when Hill capitalised on a Defty charge down. The score was converted by fly-half Birch.

Young right-winger Evans was then on the mark after Beefy Armstrong made a telling break. Birch kicked the conversion between the posts.

The final try came when Morrison crashed over at the posts after a decent break by Young – Birch added the extras to make it 36-0 at full-time.

This was a sound Morpeth performance and bodes well for the season ahead.

Birch made an immediate impact, Evans showed good pace and commitment and the effort put in by the whole team was excellent.
