A TEENAGER’S top performances for club and school have earned him a call-up to the England U16 rugby squad.
Callum Chick was initially selected for a training camp which took place in February at Hartpury College, Gloucestershire, which provided the basis for final team selection for the international match against Italy in April.
And the Ponteland High School student, who plays in the number eight position, was selected as part of the north contingent.
He has been playing for Ponteland Rugby Club’s junior teams since the age of eight.
The club’s Director of Rugby John Chappell said: “This is tremendous news for Callum and the club and hopefully he will do well if he gets on the pitch.
“We have a massive youth set-up and it’s nice to see it recognised by this call-up.”
Callum’s father, Brian, used to play for Newcastle Gosforth and he is a coach at Ponteland RFC.
Ponteland High School headteacher Kieran McGrane also wished him well for the match.
