AN ambitious Morpeth junior rugby team will be hoping to make a spectacle of itself on and off the pitch when it kicks off its Easter tour this weekend.
The town branch of Specsavers has agreed a sponsorship package with Morpeth Rugby Club U14s in a deal that has provided much-needed funding for the team’s first ever overseas rugby tour, which gets under way with two matches against teams in Noordwijk, Holland.
The move sees the firm become the main tour sponsors of the team, which has also received further funding from Coopies Lane builders’ merchants MKM and the Morpeth branch of Leeds Building Society to ensure that they are kitted out in a new strip specifically for the trip.
The Specsavers logo will appear on the chest of the team shirts, which will be worn for the first time against Gouda RFC on Saturday.
“The boys are really looking forward to the tour, so to have some smart new kit is the icing on the cake,” said Dave Chattaway, Morpeth RFC U14s coach. “We are very grateful to Ross Jennings at Specsavers who has chosen us and we will be doing all we can for a successful tour and to ensure that this becomes a long-term partnership for the rest of this and next season.”
Ross Jennings, manager at Morpeth Specsavers, said: “I’m so pleased to join forces with Morpeth RFC and help the youngsters towards a successful tour. This is a great opportunity to support grassroots rugby in Morpeth and wider Northumberland, while raising awareness of our company and activities in the local community.”
