Back to action with storming away victory

Whickham 0 Morpeth Town 3 Ebac Northern League, Division Two

AFTER an enforced break of two weeks due to bad weather, the Highway Men returned to league action at The Glebe Ground, Whickham, on Saturday.

With Hall, assisted by fellow centre-back Dunn, imperious at the back, Morpeth dominated this match from the outset.

Wing-back Wilson marauded up the right flank very effectively, linking up with the Morpeth midfield engine room of Fry and Dines as the hosts spent the first quarter of the game on the defensive.

The visitors took a deserved lead on 15 minutes when Chilton’s header from a Dines cross was clawed to apparent safety by debutant goalkeeper Hays.

The ball fell to Scott on the 18-yard line and his calm, first-time lob found the top left-hand corner of the net.

The second half continued in similar vein to the first, with composed defending restricting Whickham to the occasional long-range effort.

On the hour, Scott doubled the lead from close range after Hays had diverted a Chilton shot into his path.

Chilton completed the scoring 15 minutes from time, scoring after a fine, flowing move involving Grant, Darwent, Dines and Fry.

The Highway Men earned all three points with an excellent team performance that sets them up for the month ahead.

Ryton are the visitors on Saturday (3pm kick-off), followed by a midweek trip to Tow Law. Morpeth then continue their promotion push away to Chester-le-Street on Saturday, February 23, and home to league leaders Crook Town on Wednesday, February 27.

Morpeth: Wells, Wilson, Walmsley (Tumilty), Grant, Hall, Dunn, Dines, Fry, Scott (Darwent), Wright (Keenan), Chilton. Rusty’s Taxis man-of-the-match: Michael Hall.
