Morpeth Baptist Church 1 Stockton Churches, Portrack 6 North East Christian Fellowship Premier Division
AFTER their first win of the season last week, MBC faced a reality check against last season’s Premier Division runners-up who had won 7-1 on their previous outing.
The match started fairly evenly and for the first 20 minutes, no team dominated. There were plenty of lively challenges and good competition across the pitch.
Stockton then took the lead when a far-post header sneaked in off the left upright.
The remainder of the half saw four quick goals follow as the MBC defence were put under constant pressure.
The Portrack number 11 showed great skill and speed. From one move on the left, he drifted into the box unchallenged and fired in a shot that beat Appleby at the near-post.
From a move down the right, the centre-forward was left unmarked and headed in a third. From a free-kick from the left touchline, an away attacker again found the net from a header and another shot was fired in as MBC heads dropped.
It wasn’t quite all one-way traffic and B Lavender couldn’t get the connection he wanted on a shot after good work by Carmichael on the right-wing and an excellent ball across the face of the goal.
Coach Curry called for a determined response from the home side and he got it in the second half, which was much more even.
Players in all positions on the pitch were competing well. The substitutes came on and worked hard.
Five minutes from the end, MBC got the goal their efforts deserved.
Left-back Fletcher found himself in an unfamiliar position just inside the opposition box. When his initial shot ricocheted off the defender, he quickly fired an unstoppable shot into the top left corner.
The consolation goal wasn’t the last of the match, though, as Portrack went straight up the field from the re-start and from a speculative punt from the centre-forward wide on the left, scored the final goal of the match.
