THE Baptists faced St Oswald’s, who were only three points below them in the league table before kick-off.

Morpeth were keen to build on last week’s impressive performance but were missing a couple of familiar faces in the starting 11. Both teams faced a howling wind which was blowing across the pitch and which would prove a major factor in the quality of the football throughout the match.

It opened as a very end-to-end encounter, with both teams struggling to maintain possession as the ball was blown around the pitch.

The home side worked well with Snowball and Chambers linking up effectively down the left side and Tanney and man-of-the-match Elliott creating a nuisance on the right-wing.

From a counter-attack, St Oswald’s pumped the ball long and the Morpeth defence struggled to get it under control, which left Bird to take both man and ball on the edge of his own box, giving away a costly free-kick.

Keeper Appleby set up his wall but a well-placed strike from Logan was unstoppable as it beat both the wall and the unsighted keeper.

Morpeth reacted well and were quick to create a plethora of chances.

Chambers and Lavender combined to good effect upfront and Chambers placed a neat cross-field ball to Lavender, who slotted home, but a late call from the referee judged him to be offside.

The second-half was very similar. Again the wind played the biggest factor and created a scrappy game. It was Morpeth, though, who attempted to play all the football and the visiting side didn’t create a single chance.

Chambers was rewarded for his hard work throughout the match when he received a ball in the box and slotted home to put the home side back in the game.

Morpeth pushed on in order to try to secure the much-needed three points and Elliott should have won it but his near-post header a couple of minutes from the end of the game went just wide of the upright.
