Whitley Bay Baptists 3 Morpeth Baptist Church 2

North East Christian Fellowship Premier League

MORPETH travelled to Whitley Bay to face a side only one point below them in the league.

On a very muddy pitch the game, as expected, began with lots of long balls and headed flicks. The home side, having the greater aerial threat, dominated the first 10 minutes but after that the game soon opened up for both sides to have early chances.

A cross came into the Morpeth box on the 20-minute mark and somehow the ball made its way into the back of the net following the slightest of touches from the big number nine.

Morpeth bounced back, led by the ever-improving Bird, and seemed to control the rest of the half.

The second period proved difficult for both sides as the final ball was lacking but it was the away side that got the break from a neat ball in for Chambers to slot home and level the game.

With Morpeth in the ascendancy they kept on the pressure and a ball in from Tanney this time, across the face of goal, was met by the ever poaching Chambers to net his second and move MBC into the lead.

Within a minute Whitley Bay responded when a shot from 30 yards was cruelly deflected into the back of the net. Morpeth responded to the setback and created numerous chances but a combination of a poor pitch and a lack of quality in the final ball meant they couldn’t get the much-needed third goal.

And it was the home side who would take the three points when a lack of communication between goalkeeper Appleby and right back Elliott let the Whitley Bay striker get his second, and the decisive match-winning third.
