Baptists’ spirited performance

Morpeth Baptists 2 Hartlepool Athenians 0

NECFL, Division One

MORPETH returned to Storey Park in winning ways.

Having already beaten Hartlepool away this season, a home win was a must.

Morpeth started well with early possession and plenty of attacking plays.

Bellamy scored first when he battled well at the edge of the box to chest the ball down and rounded the defender to slot the ball past the keeper within eight minutes.

Morpeth started with a new front pairing of Johnson and Chambers and they started to link up well midway through the first half.

Chambers forced his way through the defence and completed the move with a clinical finish to put the home side two nil up.

Soon after Chambers played Johnson into space but the keeper denied his first real opportunity.

The away side dominated much of the second half with several early corners and shots on goal but the Morpeth defence were up to the challenge, led by captain and man-of-the-match Elliott, who bossed the back four throughout the game.

Substitute Snowball squandered a chance for a third goal in a late counter-attacking play.

Coach Curry commented: “It’s great to get three points but the clean sheet is tremendous following last week’s heavy away defeat.”
