Building for lift-off

MORPETH Town completed their preparations for the new season’s opening game at Bedlington Terriers in the FA Cup on Saturday with a victory over Northern Alliance Premier side Killingworth before a defeat away to Ballingry Rovers in Fife, Scotland.

All of last season’s squad who so nearly gained promotion to the first division of the Northern League last season have signed up for the forthcoming campaign.

Manager Nick Gray is delighted that former Newcastle United reserve centre-half Callum Morris will be available for selection on Saturday.

During the summer, he has strengthened his exciting young squad by signing prolific goalscorer Michael Chilton, who played in the first division last season for Newcastle Benfield and FA Vase winners Dunton UTS.

Andrew Wright, a skilful left winger, has joined the club from North Shields. Another ex-Robin at Craik Park this season will be experienced defender Paul Dunn.

Ex-West Allotment forward Gary Forbes will also be in the squad on Saturday along with former Birtley Town winger Reece Darwent. In contention for a place in the back four will be Matthew Tumilty, a skilful and tough tackling defender who has had first team experience at former club Sheffield Wednesday.

If Saturday’s game is a draw the replay will be at Craik Park on Wednesday with a 7.45pm kick-off. The opening Ebac Northern League game will be on Saturday, August 18, at home to Horden CW.
