DIDSBURY AND CHORLTON 4 MORPETH TOWN 5
Morpeth Town travelled to Manchester last Friday evening to take on West Didsbury and Chorlton in the first round of the FA Vase.
The Northumbrians showed their intent from the start and it came as no surprise when they took the lead in the 11th minute through James Novak when he thundered a terrific cross shot from 20 yards into the top of the Didsbury net.
This was followed five minutes later with a Jordan Fry goal when he stole into the six yard box, smashing the ball home following a corner that was headed across goal by Chris Swailes.
Shortly afterwards it was the turn of Chris Swailes himself to head home directly from a Graydon corner.
Then with 10 minutes of the half left Michael Chilton blasted home from five yards to make it 0-4 at half-time.
The home side came out in a more determined manner after the break and Didsbury clawed their way back into the game when they pulled a goal back after 52 minutes.
This should have shook Town up but instead it spurred Didsbury on and they pulled another goal back when Woods cut in from the right to round Harrison before slotting home.
Then with 20 mins remaining it was 3-4 when Kay again broke in from the centre forward position before slotting home from 10 yards.
At this stage Town looked as if they had done just enough until the 93rd minute when Didsbury’s Gleave broke into the box from the left before curling a shot into the bottom left hand corner of the net to level it up at 4-4.
Town at this stage were shell shocked as the Didsbury players and crowd celebrated uncontrollably on the pitch.
Jubulation was to change minutes later, however, when straight from the kick off and following passing interchange down the right, Fry curled a great cross to the far post which Chilton met supremely to head the winner.
Morpeth Town have a big game in the league on Saturday at home to Newton Aycliffe. Kick-off is 3pm.
