County schools football celebrates

THE Northumberland Schools Football Association (NSFA) is getting ready to celebrate a significant milestone.

This season marks 100 years of football organised in schools, between schools and for school pupils in Northumberland, North Tyneside and Newcastle. In that time, 69 boys from the association’s area gained international caps for England Schools at Under 15 level and a further 36 at Under 18 level.

Some very famous names have worn Northumberland’s County Colours including Bobby Charlton, Jimmy Husband, Trevor Steven, Andrew Sinton and Lee Clark.

Individual schools have won English National Championships and county teams at under 16 and 19 level have also been national champions on numerous occasions.

During the Centenary season, the NSFA will stage an Under 18 Schools International Match between England and Scotland, hopefully at St James’s Park.

There will also be a series of festival events throughout the season where many schools will come together at venues to take part in friendly competition.

The association would love to hear from any previous players about their experiences of schools football, and also from any companies that might be interested in joining it as partners in sponsorships of all kinds.
