Darlington RA 6 Morpeth Town 3 Northern League, Division Two
A FIRST half horror show left Morpeth with too much to make up in Darlington on Saturday.
Town at least salvaged some pride with a decent performance after the break to make the final scoreline more respectable.
On the back of an improved performance against Northallerton, the visitors went into this match with confidence but they could not handle their lively opponents early on.
Darlington RA took the lead with a Freddy Huscroft penalty and it soon got worse. Goals by Dave Webster and Nick Harrison (two) made it 4-0 after 32 minutes.
Town recovered a little to force some chances of their own and player/manager Trevor Benjamin pulled one back following a decent move.
But they suffered a blow before half-time when Webster scored again.
The second half was a different story and Morpeth got what they deserved following a spell of pressure on the Darlington goal. Cameron Patrick and Wyn Fremlin netted to make it 5-3.
But any hope of a comeback was extinguished when Webster completed his hat-trick.
The result leaves Town 12 points behind second-bottom club Brandon United with a game in hand.
Morpeth’s game at home to Washington FC on Tuesday night was postponed.
Hopefully, the pitch will recover in time for Saturday’s home match against Guisborough Town. Kick-off at Craik Park is 3pm.
