Extra-time heartache for the Brick Club in close cup final

IN the ES Johnson Challenge Cup final, Bedlington Barrington Arms edged out Red Row Brick Club 2-1 after extra-time.

The Monkey were on the back foot in the first half, but they came out a lot sharper in the second and took the lead with a piece of magic from Dylan Williamson.

A long ball was flicked on by Roy Pattison and after he beat a couple of defenders, Williamson unleashed an unstoppable 30-yard drive that flew into the net.

With only seconds remaining a Red Row free-kick into the box wasn’t dealt with and the ball was headed onto Adam Shanks, who made no mistake with a cool volley into the bottom left hand corner.

But Bedlington went back in front in extra-time to get the silverware. A brilliant free-kick from Calum Donohoe on the left hand side was flicked on by Chris Moffitt at the near post and the ball looped over the goalkeeper and into the top corner.

In the dying seconds, Red Row had a goal disallowed from a corner as one of their players was adjudged to have committed a foul in the build-up.

In the only other game of the day, Division Two sides North End Trap and Shakespeare Tavern battled to a 2-2 draw.

Ian Turnbull and Anth Towers both scored for the Trap and Ian Elliot grabbed a brace for the Shakespeare.
