A GROUP of teenage footballers made an eye-catching appearance in Morpeth on Saturday.
Members of the Morpeth Sporting Club Madrid U15s squad did a fancy dress fun run from Loansdean through the town centre and up to Lancaster Park to raise money for the club’s funds.
Manager Keith Gascoigne and coaches Craig Reilly and Peter Vendittelli decided to do something that would get the attention of residents and capture the imagination of their players.
On the day, Keith was injured, but he still got dressed up and the others pushed him along in a shopping trolley.
Craig said: “The lads were a bit nervous before they set off, but once they got going they really enjoyed the run. It was a bit of a laugh, even if it was made more difficult by having to take Keith with us in the trolley!
“I was really impressed with their costumes – we definitely turned a few heads along the way. We’re grateful to all of the people who donated some money and cheered on the group when we ran past.
“The players have still got to pick up some of the money from people who have sponsored them, but it looks like they will raise a decent amount for the club.”
A prize will be given out for the best costume, which will be decided by a vote among the squad, and to the player who has collected the most.
