Five-star showing for Greens

Gateshead Redheugh 1 Wallington 5 Northern Alliance, Division One

WALLINGTON stayed on course for the league title and promotion with a mesmerising attacking display at Gateshead Redheugh.

They put the disappointment of losing the League Cup final on Thursday evening behind them. After an even start, The Greens took control and Sam Walton slalomed his way through two challenges before firing across the keeper for the opening goal after quarter-of-an-hour.

Five minutes later and Walton closed down an attempted clearance which Nellis pounced on. Shielding the ball from the covering defender, the striker advanced to the penalty box before digging out a shot which flew into the top corner.

In the second half, Walton made it 3-0 to Wallington. Shaping to whip over a cross, the winger deceived the goalkeeper with a wicked shot that flew straight over him before dipping under the crossbar.

Nellis then achieved his sixth hat-trick of the campaign. His second goal came when he ran clear after a deft flick on by Josh Gilmartin to coolly lob the goalkeeper with his right foot.

Five minutes later and it was five for the visitors when again an unchallenged through-ball found him unmarked and this time with his favoured left foot he finished with aplomb into the bottom corner.

The home side did manage to pull a consolation back, but were more fortunate not to concede more before the final whistle.

On Thursday, Wallington were 2-1 ahead against Heaton Stannington thanks to goals from Nellis and Walton, but they could not cope with their opponents’ late onslaught and lost 6-2.

The club will be holding its presentation evening on Friday, June 14, at Morpeth Riverside Club. Ex-players and supporters can find out more, including ticket details, by emailing
