Footballers show racism red card

FORMER professional footballers came to Morpeth to teach youngsters about the dangers of racism.

John Anderson, who played for Newcastle United, and Dean Gordon, who turned out for Middlesbrough, were among those joining councillors and leaders from Northumberland County Council and children from schools in the area for the Show Racism the Red Card day at County Hall.

During the event, young people had the chance to take part in anti-racism activities, view the organisation’s new DVD and pose questions to the panel of players.

Educational worker at Show Racism the Red Card, Lizz Bennett, said: “We were delighted to return to Northumberland County Council and showcase our workshops to councillors in the area.

“The young people from Northumberland will no doubt benefit from the event and we hope the footballers have inspired them with the anti-racism message.

“The support that the authority has given us over the years shows its commitment to tackling racism in society.”
