Fun day hailed a success

Members of Morpeth Sporting Club were treated to a great day out as a reward for their footballing involvement this season.

Families gathered at the Pegswood Welfare field for the inaugural event and to get a first taste of the new layout for junior footballers at the venue.

Children and young adults aged between six and 17 competed in small-sided matches and received their annual team awards.

With 42 teams entered into the competition, this was no end of season stroll in the park.

There was no lack of support either, with parents and grandparents turning out in force to spur on the players.

The winning teams were as follows – Under 7s & Under 8s: Under 7 B; Under 9s & Under 10s Girls: Under 9 Thunder; Under 10s & Under 11s: Under 10 Juve A; Under 12s & Under 14s Girls: C Team; Under 12s: Real A; Under 13s & Under 14s: Under 14 Millennium B (better goal difference); Under 15s & 16s: Under 16 Madrid A (better goal difference); Under 17s & Dads: Under 17 Lisbon A.

Chairman Gary Munday was delighted that about 250 youngsters participated in the event.

He said: “Bringing together so many kids across the age groups was wonderful to see – the feel good factor around this place was tangible.

“Morpeth junior footballers are the poor relations of sports clubs in Morpeth and we have no home to call our own, so it makes events like this even more precious.

“I especially enjoyed seeing the older kids supporting and encouraging the younger age groups and some of the football was of a very high standard. We have had a lot of success by way of honours this season, but more important is the number of young people of all abilities getting involved in football.”

Morpeth Sporting Club has teams performing at all age groups in competitive leagues from seven years to 18 years, as well as training members who enjoy the involvement without the competitive games. The club also runs ‘Morpeth Minis’ – weekly sessions for ages six and seven aimed at fun with a football.

Teams are looking for new members across the age groups, up to and including Under 18, this season.
