Galaxy come back down to earth in cup run

GALAXY’S cup run came to an end despite an excellent performance against Ashington Eagles.

In front of a large crowd, the Morpeth side started on the front foot and caused uncertainty in Ashington’s defence with the long-ball game as Davison and Whittle looked to capitalise on the visitors’ dislike of aerial attacks.

Farrier and Welbury also fought hard in midfield.

Ashington were clearly unsettled in the first half having not expected what was to come.

Galaxy were then forced on the defensive as the visitors looked to launch some attacks of their own.

The centre-back pairing of Dunn and Nellis were instrumental in stopping Ashington from coming through the middle, while Morrison and McCormack coped well with their respective wingers.

Hope’s chance to shine came early on as a penalty was given for a push in the area.

Morpeth felt hard done by, but were not to be beaten as Hope got across to punch the ball wide and keep the score at 0-0.

Eventually the difference in the two teams’ league positions became evident as Ashington hit four goals midway through the second half to secure their place in the Challenge Trophy Final at Wallsend.

Galaxy had the last word though, as Farrier got to a header in the first minute of stoppage time to claim a consolation for the home team and get the side’s 50th goal of a fantastic season.
