Morpeth Sporting Club U14 Girls 4 NHP United 2 Northumberland Girls’ League Under 14 Cup Final

MORPETH capped an excellent season with a cup final victory.

The conditions at Hirst Welfare, Ashington, on Saturday were very windy and the game started very competitively with strong tackles going in from both sides – both teams had players needing attention early in the game.

Laura Blake broke the deadlock after seven minutes to put Morpeth 1-0 in front. Emily Stevenson and Bethany Robertson were causing problems down both wings and Paige Capstaff came on and made some great runs down the right-wing.

Two further goals from Blake in the first half to complete her hat-trick made the score 3-0 at the break. Their opponents tried to create openings but Morpeth’s back four of Lauren Wigham, Yasmine Shafiq, Alys Mckee and Natalie Newton had an outstanding game.

NHP United started the second half strongly and were rewarded with a goal after five minutes.

Lucy Pargeter made some fine saves before NHP got right back in the game when they scored a second goal that Morpeth just could not clear. This made the last 10 minutes very tense for both teams.

Rose McLean had a great game in the centre of midfield until she had to come off injured and was replaced by Louise Brett, who worked her socks off.

Stevenson came back on and caused NHP problems down the left. With only five minutes to go, she cut in from the left and shot past the keeper to seal the win.

The game finished 4-2 with Blake being awarded player-of-the-match. The Morpeth players could feel proud of themselves as they all put in a fine performance.

It was played in good spirits and congratulations to NHP United who finished runners-up in the league.

This has been Morpeth Sporting Club’s first season with a girls team. They also finished third in the league and were runners up in the Northumberland FA Tesco Cup.
