Morpeth Town 2 Thornaby 5 Northern League, Division Two
MORPETH’S bad habit of conceding goals cost them dear at home to Thornaby.
Both sides looked dangerous early on, but it was the visitors who opened the scoring after six minutes when Chris Wrathmall headed home a cross.
He also scored Thornaby’s second goal two minutes later – forcing the ball home from close range after a long throw was not cleared.
Town did not let their heads drop and top scorer Wyn Fremlin added to his tally when he turned home a cross from the left.
The goals continued when Alex Marshall made it 3-1 to the away side with a decent strike from just inside the box.
Morpeth pulled it back to 3-2 on 33 minutes when another left-wing cross was put into his own net by defender Iain Bickerstaff.
The hosts had chances to equalise in the second half, but good goalkeeping kept them at bay.
And they were left to rue the missed opportunities when Marshall got his second on the counter attack after 79 minutes.
Dean Fox made it 5-2 to Thornaby towards the end.
Morpeth are at home to Whickham on Saturday, kick-off 3pm, and Seaham Red Star on Tuesday, kick-off 7.30pm.
