Historic cup win for Town

Staveley MR 0 Morpeth Town 2 FA Carlsberg Vase, Third Round

THE Highway Men advanced into the last 32 of the FA Carlsberg Vase for only the second time in their history with this excellent victory in Derbyshire on Saturday, writes David McMeekan.

Their reward is a fourth-round home tie with Hereford-based Midlands Football Alliance side Westfields FC on Saturday, January 18, kicking off at 3pm.

Despite Morpeth dominating for long periods in the first half, home goalkeeper Xavier Parisi was rarely tested.

Both midfields dominated in the second half, but as the half wore on, the Highway Men started to stretch their opponents.

The opening goal came with only 15 minutes left on the clock.

Steven Anderson flicked the ball through to the predatory Michael Chilton, who crashed the ball into the net from eight yards out.

The Highway Men were now in the ascendancy and they secured their place in the next round with five minutes remaining.

Taylor released Forster down the right, he cut inside the box and unleashed an unstoppable shot from an acute angle into the far corner of the net to give Morpeth a fully deserved victory.

Morpeth Town: Mundy, Henderson, Lancaster, Bell, Hall, Hiftle, Taylor, Forster, Anderson (Hutchinson), Chilton (Swanston), Keenan (Fry).

Techflow Group Qatar man-of-the-match: Michael Hall.

Town’s next match is against Whitley Bay at home on Saturday, kick-off 3pm, in the Ebac Northern League, Division One.
