Inspirational Jonas Gutierrez says his Newcastle United farewell was like something out of a Hollywood movie.
Gutierrez scored one goal and set up another for Moussa Sissoko in yesterday’s 2-0 win over West Ham United on what was almost certainly his last appearance for the club.

Gutierrez – who made a remarkable return to the field in March after being given the all-clear following treatment for testicular cancer – was outstanding for John Carver’s side as he helped them avoid relegation from the Premier League.
The 31-year-old – who is out of contract this summer – said: “I am so proud about the result, because this club and these fans did not deserve to be in this situation,” said Gutierrez, who was at United the last time the club was relegated in 2009.
“To have gone to the Championship is not the right level for this club. I respect the Championship, because I have played in there the last time and I know how tough it is, but I think this club should be in the Premier League, and ideally the top five.
“I couldn’t have imagined something like this happening – it was like a movie.
“It is like a dream after everything I have had to go through this year.
“To score a goal in the last game, when we were fighting to stay in the Premier League, was fantastic. I really appreciate that moment and am so proud.”
Head coach Carver said he had a feeling Gutierrez would have a big say in the club’s fate.
“Two days ago I sat with him in my office and said to him you could write your own fairytale,” said Carver. “We talked about how he’s been a top player for this football club, had his illness, before his illness, went to Norwich, came back, had the illness recovered from it, came back into the team.
“I said you could be the one to get us the winning goal to get us over the line.
“It wasn’t the winner, but he got us the second goal to give us the breathing space when the pressure was on, that little bit of nervousness and tentativeness, but he gave us that breathing space and wrote his own fairytale.”
Carver would not be drawn on the future of Gutierrez.
