Morpeth SC Madrid U17 3 Renfrew FC U17 1

Renfrew FC came south from Glasgow for the weekend as guests of the Newcastle United Foundation to watch Newcastle v Stoke City on Sunday.

They wanted to play a local side during their stay, so Morpeth Sporting Club Madrid U17s played host to them a day earlier at Craik Park.

Morpeth were the first to press home an attack with good midfield play by Woodburn and Riley, resulting in Dodds having an early chance, which the Renfrew keeper reacted to.

The visitors pushed and some excellent defending by Fraser Gascoigne and Reid thwarted an on-rushing forward.

Morpeth took the lead following a breakaway, Woodburn picked out Ballentyne who set Scott through to score (1-0).

Clapperton intercepted a through-ball, which would have set the Scottish winger free, and, following excellent passing through the midfield, Robertson put Dodds through. His initial shot was saved, but the keeper was stranded and could not prevent the rebound falling back to Dodds who finished to make it 2-0.

The Morpeth back-four were forced into a reshuffle when Proudlock took a knock and had to be replaced with Quinn Gascoigne.

Morpeth continued to dominate the half with chances falling to Dodds and Scott, but Renfrew held the deficit to two at half-time.

The second half was more even with Renfrew desperate to get back into the game.

A long-range effort clipped the outside of the Morpeth goal.

Robertson left the field and Morpeth played with 10 men for the last five eventful minutes. Renfrew made the most of the extra man and only two excellent stops by Miller prevented a goal.

They were rewarded when F Gascoigne blocked a goal-bound volley, only to see the ball spin to a Renfrew forward who gave Miller no chance (2-1).

Morpeth immediately set about recovering the situation and, from the restart, Woodburn send Scott through and he blasted past the keeper to ensure the victory.

An excellent game played in the correct manner. Both sides met afterwards and a return game in Glasgow is beckoning.

Morpeth Sporting Club thanked Morpeth Town FC for the use of the facilities for the day.
