Morpeth cruise ahead

Seaton Burn U17s 2 Morpeth Sporting Club U17s 5

MORPETH Sporting Club moved easily into the last 16 of the PinPoint Recruitment League Cup with an ultimately convincing 5-2 victory over Seaton Burn.

Captain Hodgson chose to kick uphill in the last half but nevertheless Morpeth were soon in the ascendancy.

The firm, dry pitch suited Morpeth’s passing game and it was not long before the ball was switched to Henderson on the right who beat his man and shot across goal.

The keeper parried the ball but McCabe was following up to thunder it into the net.

The second goal owed an element of fortune as Baxter’s free-kick struck a Seaton Burn defender on its way into the net. However, instead of capitalising on this lead Morpeth relaxed and Seaton Burn pulled a goal back before half-time.

The good work of the first half was undone early in the second when a rasping drive from Seaton Burn also took a deflection to draw the home team level.

Morpeth rallied and man-of-the-match Willis started to show why he can be such an influential player.

Morpeth had a goal ruled offside and the Seaton Burn keeper made a string of saves before a free-kick was headed back across goal by Johnson for Whalley to stroke in at the back post.

Gill made it 4-2 with a fine lob and Megwa played a one-two with Hughes, beat his man and crashed in the fifth goal.

Morpeth are away at Forest Hall Rangers in the next round.
