Georginio Wijnaldum pleads with Newcastle United fans to keep the faith

Georginio Wijnaldum has pleaded with Newcastle United’s fans to keep the faith – after the club’s campaign took another turn for the worse.

Steve McClaren’s second-from-bottom side are winless in the Premier League and out of the Capital One Cup.

And just three months after Steve McClaren’s appointment, the club is again in crisis – despite a £50million summer spend.

Wijnaldum, one of those to arrive at St James’s Park in the last transfer window, started the season brightly. But the midfielder, like his new team, quickly faded.

And McClaren and his players were booed of the pitch after their embarrassing 1-0 midweek cup defeat to Sheffield Wednesday’s reserves.

“Of course, it’s disappointing,” said Wijnaldum ahead of tomorrow evening’s home game against league champions Chelsea.

“I hope the fans can still support us, because we are going to need them until the end of the season. Now it is still the beginning. We all must stay positive.

“They can help us a lot. If they sing for us and clap, then it gives the team a good boost to go on.

“Of course, I understand it’s difficult for the supporters. They also had confidence that this year was going to be different to last year.

“But we are still at the beginning. It is still a new year – we cannot look back.”

The Holland international added: “We must look forward. I am sure they will support us at the next game.”
