The Magpies are yet to sign a player this summer, and there is growing frustration among supporters at a perceived lack of progress in the transfer market.

And McClaren – who has only spoken to United’s ‘preferred media partners’ since taking charge at St James’s Park – acknowledged this sentiment in his e-mail.

He wrote: “I know the anticipation is already out there and you want to see new players coming through the door immediately. That is natural.

“For me as head coach, however, is is so important that that right players come through the door.

“However long that takes, I want to make sure that we have just the type of people who can come in and force us forward.”

McClaren also confirmed his backroom team in the email.

The 54-year-old, as previously reported, will be assisted by Ian Cathro and Paul Simpson. Alessandro Shoenmaker is United’s new fitness coach, while sports psychologist Steve Black has joined as a consultant.

Andy Woodman remains Newcastle’s goalkeeping coach.
