Janmaat and his team-mates travel to Etihad Stadium on Saturday buoyed by their performance against Chelsea at the weekend.

Newcastle, however, remain 19th in the table after the 2-2 draw.

And City – who are away to Borussia Monchengladbach in the Champions League tonight – are odds-on favourites to return to winning ways after successive domestic league defeats.

But defender Janmaat believes United’s performance against Chelsea has given Steve McClaren’s players a welcome lift.

“The next game will be tough, but it’s important we go there with nothing to fear,” said Janmaat.

“If we play in the same way that we did against Chelsea, then I don’t think anyone would be wanting to play Newcastle, including City.

“City started the season brilliantly, but maybe they are struggling a little bit more at the moment.

“They got beat a couple of weeks ago, and then they lost again against Tottenham.

“We know they are still a very good side, but we have to have the belief that we can do something there.

“If we have that belief, and play in the same way that we did against Chelsea, then I’m sure we can get a good result.”

Newcastle led Chelsea 2-0, but second-half goals from substitutes Ramires and Willian claimed a point for Jose Mourinho’s side.

“The first half against was really good, probably the best half we have played all season,” said Janmaat.

“The second half was a bit different because we were under pressure, so the draw was probably a fair result.

“Overall, it was a good day though, and it has given us something to build on.

“Hopefully, it has answered a few questions.

“There have been times this season where we have shown it is in there.

“We just need to do it on a much more consistent basis now.

“Maybe everyone has to believe in themselves a little bit more because we have shown we can do it.

“If the belief is there, then I’m sure the wins will come too.”
