One is enough

Wallington 1 Forest Hall 0 Northern Alliance, Division One

A SINGLE goal proved the difference once again in Wallington’s favour as they recorded their third triumph over Forest Hall in as many months.

The three points helped solidify The Greens’ hold on third place while moving them four points clear of fourth-placed Gosforth Bohemians and within touching distance of Wallsend Town in second, with three games still in hand.

On a rapidly deteriorating pitch at Scot’s Gap, there was plenty of enterprising football on show from the home side.

John Paxton almost broke the deadlock but his half-volley just sailed wide.

But the game’s decisive moment came halfway through the first half when the excellent Gilmartin’s quick thinking fed McAlpine from a throw-in.

After one touch the striker drove a wicked cross to the back post where Thompson leapt above two defenders to connect with the ball. Although it hit the crossbar, he reacted quicker than anyone else to smash the rebound into the roof of the net.

The Greens had the better of the second half, but were unable to ram home their dominance which resulted in a nervy climax.

And they were grateful to goalkeeper Straker who made a good save and fist clearance in the final few minutes.
