FOUR Morpeth Sunday League sides were involved in county cup fixtures at the weekend with Ashington RAOB the pick of the bunch, thrashing Burradon 6-0 away.
This saw the RAOB progress to the third round of the Northumberland FA Justsport Sunday Minor Cup but unfortunately they weren’t joined by any of their league compatriots.
Division Two strugglers Alnmouth Argyle went down 4-1 at home to Monkseaton Arms while Bedlington Barrington Arms also took a home hiding, conceding six to Newcastle Westfield and only managing one in reply. Red Row Brick Club lost out 5-3 at home to North Shields Royal Arms.
There was only one fixture in Division One and Stakeford Half Moon could not take the opportunity to go clear at the top of the table after they slumped to a 3-2 defeat at Bomarsund SC.
In Division Two, Village Inn Longframlington took advantage of previous league leaders Ashington RAOB being in cup action to leapfrog them.
In a closely-fought match, Village Inn beat Newbiggin Bankhouse 4-3 to sit pretty at the top of the league.
Third-placed Amble Dock Hotel couldn’t capitalise, however, and went down 4-2 at Morpeth Chantry. Neighbours Morpeth Riverside beat East Chevington 4-1.
In more cup action, several teams played their ES Johnston Challenge Cup Round Two fixtures.
In the tie of the day, River Coquet went through on the odd goal in nine, winning a 5-4 thriller at home against Felton.
Elsewhere, Amble Pier were comfortable 4-0 winners at Stobswood Welfare, while Pegswood Ex progress thanks to a 3-1 win over Blackthorn Rovers.
