Morpeth Sporting Club U14 v North Shields U14 Northumberland Girls League Shield Final
This top-of-the-table clash promised to be a close-fought game and the crowd were not disappointed.
And it was the Morpeth supporters who went home happy as their team won after extra-time.
Early pressure from Morpeth saw some fine saves from the Shields keeper to keep the game all-square. With both teams using space well and cool defending from Redpath, Robertson and Munday, it needed a super long-range curler from the edge of the box to give North Shields the lead.
Into the second half, Walker regularly found space down the wings and she was rewarded for her efforts when she was fouled in the box having broke through the Shields defence. McGarry powered the resulting penalty into the top of the net to level the scores.
Morpeth looked the most likely to take control of the game, however, it was Shields that had a strong spell of attacking pressure and after hitting the woodwork twice, they were awarded a penalty. Lough was unlucky to see the spot-kick go in having got a strong hand to the ball.
Morpeth responded well and a fine strike from Henderson made it 2-2. Long-throw specialist Munday continued to drop bombs into the box, but strong defending from Shields’ defence kept the scores level until the full-time whistle despite some fine probing passes from substitute Charlton.
Extra-time saw both teams pushing for the win with end-to-end excitement and McGarry broke the deadlock after some good build-up play. A fresh pair of legs in the form of Lynch helped to relieve some of the pressure as Morpeth held the lead to win the shield.
This capped off a fine season for the Girls, who will look to build on this victory and their second-place league position next season.
