Sporting goes back to winning ways

Morpeth Sporting U17s 4 Burradon U17s 2

MORPETH’S unbeaten record had come to an abrupt end earlier in the week when they had lost 2-1 at Blyth.

Although the scoreline had suggested a close game, Blyth had been superior throughout and only a fine display by Morpeth goalkeeper Dan Carr had kept the home team from winning by a distance.

Sporting needed to move on from such a poor effort as quickly as possible, so it was encouraging to see the home team start with more determination against Burradon.

They passed the ball much better than in the previous game and it was no surprise when Marc Tully ran past a number of defenders and finished with a good shot to put the home team ahead.

Tully continued to do well throughout the first half and almost provided more goals from his passes. However, when the second goal did come, it was as a result of good work by James Brown, who crossed well for Craig Robertson to apply the finishing touch.

Morpeth created a few more chances, with Adam Fawcett a constant threat on the left side, but were unable to add to their goal tally.

The hosts took their two goal lead into the break but found the opening ten minutes of the second half much more challenging.

Once again, a lack of determination and commitment allowed the opposition to take the upper hand and Burradon looked the more likely to score.

Joseph Laux and Alex Vescio did very well in the centre of defence to keep Burradon’s attack at bay and it was Morpeth who scored the next goal when a dangerous corner from Jack Travers was headed into the net by Brown.

Burradon responded quickly and scored from a penalty to put them back into the game. However, Morpeth added a fourth through Luke Rolt’s neat finish to put the home team in control.

Morpeth had a number of opportunities to add more goals, with Jack Phillips and Rolt going close, before Burradon broke away to score their second a few minutes from the final whistle.

Morpeth squad: Carr, Tordoff, Laux, Vescio, Fawcett, Tully, Wilson, Brown, Travers, Robertson, Rolt, Nelson, Phillips, Hunter.
